Fan of the Day- Nick Zoellner

We weren’t sure what to expect when we hopped in the golf cart to search for the last fan-of-the-day. We knew the amount of die hard fans would be numerous on race day and picking one seemed extremely challenging. Our quest led us to the Snake Pit and that was when we saw a “chest of awesomeness” standing out amongst the crowds of people. We’ve saved the best for last, meet fan-of-the-day: Nick Zoellner.

When was your first Indy 500?

Nick’s first Indy 500 race was back in 2005 when Dan Wheldon won. It is now Nick’s tradition to come to the race every year with his friends, camp out before the race and watch the race from the Snake Pit.

Who is your favorite driver and why?

Jay Howard is Nick’s favorite driver because he had the chance to meet him in person. Nick thought of Howard as a really nice guy. Nick was clearly still supportive of the Sarah Fisher Racing Team even though Howard failed to qualify for the race this year.

What is your favorite Indy 500 memory?

His favorite memory of the Indy 500 was this year because shaving his chest was not an easy task. He said a stencil of the checkered flag was used to mark off the squares, which then had to be carefully “manscaped” by his girlfriend. The entire process took about an hour and half to complete.

How should the Indianapolis Motor Speedway celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 next year?

Nick thought that the campground experience should be amped up a bit. He suggest that a concert with a big name band be in attendance.

What did you think of the Fan of the Day Blog leading up the Indy 500? Suggestions?

I am so sick of watching the 500 and knowing that the only teams that have a chance of winning are the big corparate teams such as penske or ganasi.the teams with small budgets have no chance at all.

Congratulations to Everyone at IMS for putting on yet another world class event. You truley have alot to be proud of. We all know of course that it is the fans that make the race a reality and as an avid fan who has attended the race every year since 1992. Could you please find out and work on traffic coming into the track. This has become a huge problem. I sat on 30th street from 6 15 am till well past 8 before I was allowed to cross Lafayette road. I sat and watched as hundereds of cars from both directions were let onto 30th in front of me and when we finally had a chance they let 5-6 cars per lane accross. Absolutley rediculous and never used to be a problem… The traffic coming out used to be a breeze but this year the traffic police did nothing and there was potential accidents at every intersection while local police just sat there.

    So what happened??????

@ Michael Bell – How can you be sick of it? Indy has ALWAYS been like that. Whichever team has the most money to spend normally wins. It has been like that since the beginning and its the same in all motorsports. Even in the golden era, Penske and Newman-Haas won the vast majority of races. Having top-dominant teams and small underfunded no-hopers is as much as an Indy tradition as the drinking of the milk, you could even say its more of a tradition since it has been that way since the beginning (heck it was even that way during the hot-air balloon races era).

Fuzz, I am not surprised at all…

If you don’t think this is awesome, you don’t know what the “true” 500 is all about!
