Thursday, June 10 will be a very cool day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as two legends of the track will get together for an event.
That alone is nothing new. We’re fortunate at IMS to get great cooperation from drivers past and present when it comes to meeting with the media and promoting our races. But it’s not very often when one legend gets together at the Racing Capital of the World with another whom he idolized as a kid.
And that’s exactly what’s going to happen Thursday when four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears and three-time Brickyard 400 winner Jimmie Johnson hook up at the Yard of Bricks. Jimmie idolized fellow Californian Rick when he was growing up, as both guys cut their racing teeth in off-road racing before heading to glory on asphalt, including at Indianapolis — Rick in an Indy car and Jimmie in a stock car.
The legends are going to take a ride together in a Chevrolet Corvette around the 2.5-mile oval, stopping so each can drive, and sharing stories about their victories at IMS, the track and so much more.
Jimmie and Rick then will participate in a live video chat with fans from 4:45-5:15 p.m. (ET). You can ask them questions now through the IMS Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/IndyTalk or @IndyTalk. And you can watch the chat live by clicking here at 4:45 p.m.
We’ll have complete coverage of a very cool day at the track, including a story, photos and video at the IMS YouTube channel on Thursday evening and Friday. Please check it out!
You never know: Maybe Jimmie can join Rick as a four-time winner at Indy when he returns to IMS to defend his Brickyard 400 title on July 23-25.
