The first 500 I missed after 10 years (I started going @ age 13 in 1959). I missed the race because I was in Viet Nam and the military would not grant me leave to come home for the race (imagine that). Listened to the race on a radio borrowed from a friend.

This was my first race at the age of 13. My Dad and I went together and sat on the outside of turn 3. There was a horrendous accident and fire. We saw a track worker with a fire extinquisher get hit, then shortly after the race resumed a fan behind us had an eppileptic seizure. I’ll never forget that day.
