I was there with my dad. That was the last time we went to the 500 together. We sat on the front stretch about 10 rows back, just past the start/finsih line going towards turn 1. Great memory…. thanks for reminding me
My favorite memory from the 1991 happened on a restart very late in the race, with Michael Andretti’s daring outside pass in turn one to take the lead from Mears. One lap later, Mears performed the exact same move on Andretti to re-take the lead! Though there would be another caution period, Mears would power away on the restart and go on to win his fourth.
Thank god for snow days. I was supposed to graduate from high school on race day in ‘91. Seeing this photo brings back good memories, mostly because I was an AJ Foyt fan.
That Front Row just gives me chills. May be a long time until we see three as good as those three back on the front row. Thanks for sharing
Hands down the most accomplished front row in history. No contest. And not just for their Indy achievements, but also all the different types of races and championships they won.
I was there, too, in turn 3. My 5th Indianapolis 500, and second time I got to see my favorite driver of all time (Mears) win. I graduated HS shortly after the race…what a graduation present!
I was sitting in the North Terrace inside the track on the front stretch…right before the pit entrance…it was a pretty bad seat but we thought we had it made because at least we could see the cars from about half way through 4 all the way down the front stretch….Ill never forget AJ came rolling by with the front broke and one of the back tires bouncing off the track and waving to us all in the stands we were all cheering…
