This week was an exciting one for IMS! Dan Wheldon was here with the 2012 INDYCAR for a few days of testing. It’s always an honor to have Dan at the speedway, but it was an even bigger honor to have him here in the 2012 INDYCAR. The IMS oval has had the rare opportunity of seeing the complete evolution of the INDYCAR race over its famed 2.5 miles – think about how the cars have changed over the years. The sleek 2012 model looked great crossing the yard of bricks.
Dan had great things to say about the new car, and the testing program this year. “The evolution lately, over the last few tests, has been phenomenal,” Dan says about the new model.
It was great to see the 2012 INDYCAR on our oval, and we can’t wait to see a field of 33 race around the track next May. What do you think of the new model? Thoughts, opinions, concerns?

More. I want more. Full chat on the oval.
I’m glad the car performance wise will be better, but it might be the ugliest thing I have seen in an open wheel car. It’s hard to get excited about something so damn ugly when you grew up with Lola’s, Swift, Reynard, and the DP-01 to admire. I find it hard to believe that’s the best they could do. It’s almost like they tried to make this thing uglier then the present car.
Tho I appreciate progress being made in the interest of safety regarding the wheels not launching a car, I too miss the ground roots efforts of teams prior to ground effects making all the cars look the same. Honda is a great company, but just as the tire war is gone, there’s no reason to push the envelope. Take the push button away that provides a burst of energy, take away the ground effects to force the drivers to use the brake pedal and let’s go racing!
Hopefully they will all look different when the body kits start coming out. That is Dallara’s version who knows what the others will create. Patience with the process should create rewards.
Bad looking car with a turbocharged engine. Yea!
kind of reminds me of the old Pepsi Challenger Eagle. that car was way cool and I think way to far ahead of its time.
“Take the push button away that provides a burst of energy, take away the ground effects to force the drivers to use the brake pedal and let’s go racing!”
agreed. let the drivers be drivers, NOT someone just along for the ride. NASCAR needs to take the same advice and do away with their rear spoilers, front splitters and the side skirts.
It looks kind of funky, but people will like the way it looks a lot better if the track record falls next May.
Can only imagine Dans’ first comment out of the car. “Does this car make my butt look big?”
need to hear more of the new v6, from what ive heard so far they sound horrible, dull half the greatness of indy is the sound buick v6 was fast but boring sound hope they didnt blow it
I really like the look and the fact that there will be more than one engine manufacturer as the race has become somewhat of a spec race with everyone using the same engine\chassis … I would really like to see the track record broken !! bring back the days of real technology at the brickyard … “a new track record …”
Indycar will go for the additional testing of the new cars. It should be there because we have faced a bad episode and one of the great racers is not among us. As far as the new car model is concern fine racers have appreciated it.
